Sandwiches of Peoria - The Torpedo @ Leonardo’s/La Gondola

by MBIP

When I moved back to Peoria in 2012, I was a little disappointed in the Gondola sandwich at Avanti’s. The bread wasn’t as good and I felt like they were skimping on the ingredients a little bit. In July of 2016, when I was doing my year-long sandwich tour, I found a wonderful substitute for Avanti’s Gondola: The Torpedo at Leonardo’s/La Gondola.

Scroll down to see photos of these marvelous sandwich and a link to the original post that features a gondola showdown between Avanti’s and Leonardo’s/La Gondola.

My friend Mary Jo not only joined me for lunch at Leonardo’s/La Gondola, but she drove! We’ve been friends since the sixth grade and she deserves a medal of honor for being my friend for that long!

Here we are at Leonardo’s/La Gondola. This place has been standing tall in this location for over 40 years! A real Peoria institution!

Here’s Kristina expertly building their signature sandwich, The Torpedo.

Mary Jo got a personal pizza and there I am clutching the Torpedo!

This is a true Gondola sandwich! Freshly baked bread that houses a generous portion of ham, salami, American Cheese and fresh lettuce! Truly delicious and satisfying!
