I can’t believe it’s been over seven years since I last did a post on The Fiber University on Water Street in downtown Peoria. You can click right here to see that post.

I thought it was a cool and charming shop and wondered if Erin, who owns the shop could sustain such a niche business that focuses on knitting and yarn and I’m happy to say that she’s pulled it off.

I think we’re overdue for a visit so let’s make like Petula Clark and go downtown for a visit to The Fiber Universe!

2. outside_8-20-20.jpg

The Fiber Universe is located in the Contemporary Art Center building on Water Street which also houses the Rhythm Kitchen Music Cafe.

Let’s go in and see what’s happening inside.

3. storefront_8-20-20.jpg

The Fiber Universe is the first shop on the right as you enter. The front window looks beautiful and I think I see a familiar face inside behind the front counter…

It’s Erin, the owner of The Fiber Universe! It was fun to catch up with her and neither of us could believe it’s been over seven years since the last post.

She said that it’s been a bit of a challenge running a local business in the middle of a pandemic, but she said she’s getting by.

Hopefully she and all of the local businesses can weather this storm till next year, you can help by stopping by and shopping locally.

The chalkboard is the same one that was here since my last visit, it’s just been moved to the side wall.

In addition to buying items at the shop, you can also purchase products at The Fiber Universe Website.

6. store_8-20-20.jpg

As you can see, there’s a lot of inventory packed in here, let’s take a look around.

7. reading_8-20-20.jpg

Shelves and racks with knitting magazines and books are located in various spots in the shop.

8. caps_8-20-20.jpg

A nice selection of unique knit caps are on display.

9. clothing_8-20-20.jpg

You can also purchase clothing, accessories and handbags in here. This is a nice place to find a unique, one-of-a-kind gift for someone.

10. knittingneedles_8-20-20.jpg

There’s a whole wall of knitting needles…but needles make me nervous, so let’s just keep moving along here.

11. knittingstuff_8-20-20.jpg

There’s more fun and unique items on tables and on the couches and chairs in the front of the store.

12. yarn_8-20-20.jpg

And, as it says on the front window, there’s yarn, yarn, yarn.

And even more yarn after that!

13. orbs_8-20-20.jpg

The yarn orbs aren’t for sale, they hang to create atmosphere in The Fiber Universe.

Erin told me that one of the deciding factors in choosing the name, Fiber Universe, was that the initials were, “FU.” As in “FU, I’m knitting.” Ha ha ha, I love that!

14. fu_8-20-20.jpg

And here’s that bold statement on a t-shirt!

“FU, I’m knitting” should be the catch-phrase for this rotten year of 2020!

15. pandemicpurchase_8-20-20.jpg

Of course I had to buy it for this week’s local pandemic purchase.

Great to see Erin again and I’m happy she’s sustaining The Fiber Universe in these tough times. Stop by and make a purchase here and at other locally owned businesses.
