The Costume Trunk is one of the most unique shops in Peoria and the longest standing business on West Main Street. The store is in its 39th year and is Peoria’s only destination for unique costumes, wigs, make-up, mascots, novelties and fun gift items.

The owner of The Costume Trunk, Steve Spain is also a magician, an avid Walt Disney collector and one of the nicest guys in Peoria. Let’s stop by and say hi to Steve and take a tour of this fascinating and fun local Peoria business!

Here we are at The Costume Trunk on West Main Street. There’s lots of fun and unique businesses in this area of Peoria, but The Costume Trunk was the first on the block!

Let’s go in and see what’s happening!

There’s the affable owner of The Costume Trunk behind the counter, Steve Spain! He’s been selling masks for years and now he’s wearing one! Always great to see and chat with him!

I mentioned in the introduction that Steve’s a Walt Disney collector and enthusiast and here’s a book that highlights his collection. You can read more about the book at this 2016 MBIP post. I also visited Steve at his house and got to see his vast collection in person, check that out here. Two years later, his collection was on display at the Peoria Riverfront Museum and of course there’s an MBIP post on that as well!

Kevin was in the shop and he and Steve used to perform magic shows together. I met Kevin six years ago at Khaki Jack’s and it was great to see him again and catch up with both he and Steve!

Okay, let’s take a look around at The Costume Trunk!

5. frontcounters_8-12-20.jpg

There’s colorful wigs in the glass counters along with sparkly ruby-red Wizard of Oz shoes and a hat that reminds me that the International Talk Like A Pirate Day is just about a month away!

6. mascotheads_8-12-20.jpg

Giant mascot heads line the perimeter of the ceiling, staring down at all who enter..

7. hatsjacketties_8-12-20.jpg

There’s a large selection of hats, an Elvis-styled gold lame jacket and patriotic bow ties on display.

8. halloween_8-12-20.jpg

High quality and frightening Halloween masks hang over the front counter.

9. beard_8-12-20.jpg

This wall has make-up, novelty items, bunny ears and fake beards. Hey, where’s the plastic chickens?

10. masks_8-12-20.jpg

Steve Spain has been selling masks for decades, making him a man truly ahead of his time!

11. otherside_8-12-20.jpeg

There’s more fun behind this door!

12. clothing_8-12-20.jpg

On this side most of the items are for sale, as opposed to a lot of the rental costumes in the other space. There’s all kinds of jackets, shirts, shoes and even hats to make your own unique costume.

13. costumes_8-12-20.jpg

This wall features pre-packaged costumes for sale. If you get the bottom one the yolk is definitely on you! Sorry about that, but it had to be done!

14. sunglasses_8-12-20.jpeg

Suddenly…sunglasses!

15. ringingup_8-12-20.jpg

We went back to the home space and Steve rang up this week’s Pandemic Purchase which is…

A mask, of course!

Thanks to Steve and Kevin for a fun afternoon and some lively conversation at The Costume Trunk, one of Peoria’s most unique and beloved businesses!
