I’ve only tried a hot dog at Portillo’s once in 2022. I got a chili cheese dog and it was simply horrifying, they had a shit-ton of beans in the chili! I always argue that beans do not belong in chili and they really don’t belong in a chili cheese dog! So I’ve stayed away from them ever since.
I thought I’d give them a second chance since on this tour I’m eating the hot dogs with the classic condiments of just mustard and onions.
Okay, Portillo’s the pressure is on, can you make up for that last horrifying visit? We’re going to find out shortly. Hot diggity dog!
Here we are at Portillio’s, the sign is here, but the entrance is all the way on the other side of the building. I find that annoying, but what are you going to do?
Let’s go in and start our tenth week of this doggone tour!
You order over here at this window. We have order number 364.
You have to pick up your order all the way at the other end of the counter. While we wait, I’ll take some photos in here.
There’s a photo of the first Portillo’s back when it was called, “The Dog House.”
The main dining room has all kinds of stuff hanging from the ceiling and check out the giant hot dog piece of art on the wall over here.
There’s a picture of a hamburger, but to me it looks like a huge chocolate cookie on a bun!
Finally after about a ten minute wait, my order was ready. This is definitely not fast food!
I chose this booth to sit and sample this week’s hot dog lunch.
I got their signature Chocolate Cake Shake and it was a sweet treat for sure!
It’s a chocolate shake with a piece of their homemade chocolate cake mixed in! The only down side is that it’s so thick, you can’t drink it with the straw!
The fries were krinkle cut, which I usually don’t care for, but these were small and crispy and I thought they were decent fries.
Okay, on to the star of the show, this week’s hot dog!
They gave me two hot dogs!
I only ordered one, so this was a surprise and it explained the price I paid for this order.
I thought it was pretty expensive to pay over thirteen bucks for a hot dog, a small shake and a small order of fries and it’s because they charged me for two hot dogs when I just ordered one!
I got stuck for around four bucks for a hot dog I didn’t order. I didn’t want to go and get my money back because it probably would’ve been a big hassle and I didn’t have the time to waste.
The first time I came here they gave me a horrific bean covered chili cheese dog and this time they ripped me off for four bucks! Sheesh!
Not a good track record, Portillo’s!
****UPDATE: It’s just been pointed out that they didn’t charge me for the extra hot dog. Math was never my strong suit! But they still screwed up the order! So there!
The hot dog was really good. It had a nice beefy and savory flavor, the bun was bakery fresh and the mustard and onions complimented it nicely.
I could only eat one though, so I had to throw the other one out and it made me feel bad to waste food and it was also like throwing four bucks in the trash!

Hot Dog Rating
This was the best hot dog I’ve had so far and it would have gotten a rating of three and a half wiener dogs, but since they screwed up the order and overcharged me…
They get bumped a point and get a rating of two and a half wiener dogs. Another foul trip to Portillo’s…this is ruff stuff!
