Live, from Peoria, it’s Saturday Night Cheeseburger starring this week’s host, Marty’s Apartment with special guest star Schnuck’s Grocery Store and featuring The Ready For Prime Beef Player, Marty Wombacher. And now, direct from the MBIP Headquarters, please welcome, Marty’s Apartment!
Okay, we celebrated a year anniversary here last week at MBIP and now I have to tell you, I’ve kind of run out of places to go for Saturday Night Cheeseburger. And I have to confess, it’s a little bit of a relief. The first Saturday Night Cheeseburger episode started over at my 365 Bar Crawl blog on Saturday, April 3rd, 2010. That’s over three years of cheeseburgers every fucking single Saturday night and to tell you the truth, I’ve finally had it with cheeseburgers for a while! Plus, since I have to work on Saturday nights, I’ve kind of exhausted late night places to eat around here.
So what I thought I’d do, since we’re a year old here at MBIP is to go back to the places I went to last year, in exact order and try something other than a cheeseburger there. It’ll be fun to see if any of the same people are there and if they remember me. The very first SNC episode last year was posted on December 17 and I was sick as a dog, so I went to Schnuck’s and made a mini burger at my apartment. And so that’s where we shall begin again, but this time we’ll make something different. And so off into the night we go!
Here we are at Schnucks Grocery Store on a cold and snowy Saturday night.
Let's go inside, it's freezing out here!
I'm guessing the winning message is: "You just don't walk in off the street and write for the PJ Star!" #NeverForget
Last year I wrote about how I was amazed by how big grocery stores are here in Peoria and I still am bowled over by how big they are.
I think we all know what needs to be done here...
Obligatory bathroom mirror shot!
The grocery store is a lonely old place at 10:33PM on a snowy Saturday night.
But there's no better cure for loneliness than cold beer and they have a whole room dedicated to frothy goodness here, let's go check it out.
Wow, check out the 25 ounce cans of Budweiser in here!
Okay, we're at the checkout lane and look at the name on the food blocker thingy: Mari Halliday! Is that the perfect holiday name or what? Here's her website. Consider the free link a gift, Mari! And have a Mari Halliday!
Debby checked us out, you gotta love her Santa Green Bay Packer hat!
Okay, the food has been paid for, now it's back to the MBIP mobile...
And through the miracle of the internet, here we are back at MBIP Headquarters and the ingredients for tonight's non-cheeseburger meal. We have Chorizo sausage, crispy onions, Plugra European salted butter, Beefsteak hearty rye bread, Hormel honey deli ham, Hoffman super sharp cheddar cheese, Chianti red wine salami, Cabot hot habanero cheese, Kaukauno port wine cheese spread and Chicago Flat Onion crackers.
Okay, I have to prep the food, while I do this you can watch this video, it's a new band called Haim. They're three sisters and they're great, check them out. First band i've really got into for a long time. No auto-tuning going on here!
Here's the ingredients. I've decided to make a meaty grilled cheese sandwich, but first we'll have an appetizer.
I've taken some of the Chicago flat onion crackers and topped them with some of the port wine cheese spread, a slice of the sharp cheddar cheese and a slice of ham.
We'll zap them under the broiler for a few minutes...
The final touch is a little blast of Kathy's Cleveland mustard on top.
Delicious, now on to the main course, the meaty grilled cheese sandwich!
We'll start building the sandwich by applying a coating of the port wine cheese spread onto two slices of the rye bread.
The rest of the meat and cheeses have been gingerly put in place.
Next we smoosh them down for a pressed sandwich.
Now we melt a big hunk of the Plugra European salted butter into my green, non-stick frying pan. This is really good butter and it's an integral part of this sandwich making process.
The sandwich is now grilling and swimming in the butter.
I've covered the sandwich to steam it and really get it super melty and good.
Here's a bird's eye view of tonight's creation. It smells so good!
Looks like lots of flavor in this grilled cheese meaty delight!
Wow, it's really delicious, if I do say so myself and I just did, so there!
And now time for a little dessert! We'll see you all tomorrow!
My Saturday Night Meal
Since I made my own sandwich, I’m not going to review it, but this is where the future reviews will go. And what kind of rating system will I use?
Saturday Night Meal Rating
I decided we’d use the Galloping Gourmet, since we’re galloping back to the places we went to a year ago. And I’m giving my sandwich four Galloping Gourmets! Hoo hah!
