Time flies when you’re doing a daily blog. It seems like just yesterday I had stopped in to check out Peoria’s only takeout tamale restaurant, which I found out about from Chip Joyce. The place I’m talking about is Emily’s Tattoo Tamales on Heading in West Peoria.
When I decided to do a Mexican food tour in and around Peoria, I thought it would be fun to make a return visit. Then I looked at the original post and found it was almost five years ago since I went there!
I’d say it’s time for a return visit and so it’s off we go into the wild blue yonder to Emily’s Tattoo Tamales!
I called and spoke with Kim, who’s the owner and chef at Emily’s Tattoo Tamales and she said she is no longer offering the burlap bags, but since I got one on my last visit, she said she’d honor the discount and fill it up with a dozen homemade tamales!
So I grabbed the bag, pointed the MBIP Mobile towards West Peoria and here we are at the Woodridge Professional Building. I went inside and saw that Emily’s Tattoo Tamales is still located in the basement in suite number 105.
So we’ll go down the hallway and take the stairway to tamales! If you come here in the afternoon the delightful aroma of freshly-baked tamales will lead you to Emily’s and here we are.
Let’s go inside and see if our tamales are ready to go!
There’s Kim, the lovely and friendly owner of Emily’s Tattoo Tamales and she’s bagging our dozen tamales up. I got a mixed assortment and Kim included Chicken and Cheese, Hot Pork, Cheese and Cactus and Cheese Tamales.

Tamales are lined up to be put together, there’s a couple of finished ones and there’s a painting of Kim’s mom and her grandmother, Emily, whom the place is named after.
It was Emily’s tamale recipes that inspired Kim to start her tamale takeout and catering service over five years ago. She told me business has been great and I was happy to hear that!
There’s Kim bagging the finished tamales off…
And we’re ready to roll! Since this is a takeout service, I decided take the dozen tamales to a sweet spot nearby on Main Street…
Las Delicias Ice Cream Shop! I thought I’d see if they’d let me eat the tamales inside and then we could have some of their homemade Mexican Ice Cream for dessert.
Let’s go in and see if this sweet and savory dream can come true!
Ana, Mary and Margarita were behind the counter and they said I was more than welcome to eat the tamales at Las Delicias! Perfect!
I settled in at this table which has a nice view of Main Street and the traffic rolling by. I love the handprinted Emily’s Tattoo Tamale husks! They smell so good, time to dig in!
I sampled the Hot Pork and the Cheese and Chicken Tamales and they are so tasty! The Hot Pork is nice and spicy and the Cheese and Chicken is rich and delicious!
These are such a taste treat and if you want to sample some authentic and homemade tamales, you need to get a dozen of these to go!
David does cleaning here and I offered him a tamale and he happily took me up on my offer!
And now, let’s do what that sign says, let’s eat ice cream!
Everything here is homemade and they have a large selection popsicles and ice cream. I got a dish of their Oreo Ice Cream with some hot caramel on top.
There’s Ana serving it up and it looks so creamy and good!
The ice cream is homemade and it’s so delicious…I mean it’s Las Delicias!

Four Pepe Tacos—Emily’s Tattoo Tamales is Peoria’s only takeout tamale restaurant and the tamales there are unlike any you’ve ever had. The tamales are large and so tasty! She has the largest selection of flavors and in addition to the takeout service, Kim also caters parties, wedding and corporate events. If you want a sweet and savory treat, get a dozen of them to go and take them to Las Delicias and have some of their delicious Mexican styled ice cream for a real south of the border feast!
