A few weeks ago I went to EatandEvolve and tried out their chicken and waffles entree and it was delicious! Since then I’ve discovered two other places in Peoria that feature this unique chicken dish, so I thought I’d do a mini chicken and waffles tour within this chicken eating tour.
This week we’ll be sampling chicken and waffles at Childers Eatery in Junction City which is just a stone’s throw from EatandEvolve! Who knew chicken and waffles were available so close to each other? Well, you do now, because I just told you. You’re welcome, now let’s go try the chicken and waffles at Childers Eatery!
Here we are at Childers Eatery in Junction City. Let’s get inside because it’s freezing out here! I have mentioned how much I HATE winter, haven’t I? Oh good.
The sign says to “wait to be seated” so I gazed at some donuts and a pair of jumbo cinnamon rolls and then Jason magically appeared and said that he’d seat us. Well this is working out perfectly!
Childers is a breakfast and lunch spot, their hours are 6am to 3pm. I got here around 1:45 in the afternoon so there wasn’t a big crowd and I asked Jason if I could sit at a booth. He said sure and guided me to my own personal booth! Nice!
Lots of condiments are on display here including a stack of Smucker’s Jelly. This leads me to a flashback memory of that Smucker’s ad campaign, “With a name like Smuckers...”
I was excited about this chicken and waffles dish because the menu says it’s made with a waffled buttermilk cheddar biscuit and that sounded really tasty! However, when Jake our server for the afternoon showed up, he told me that they’ve altered the recipe and it’s now made with just a standard waffle. That was disappointing news, but Jake assured me it was still a delicious dish.
I mentioned that Childers is usually closed after 3PM, but there’s an exception to this rule on Valentine’s Day. They’re open for dinner this Thursday and if you’d like to have a romantic dinner there. Click here for more details.
Here’s the wall opposite where I’m seated and all of the plants hanging there are real. Very Impressive!
There’s the main dining room and opposite that is...
The bar! They have a full line of drinks here and bare bulbs hang overhead illuminating the space.
The kitchen area is on full display so you can see your meal being prepared right before your very eyes.
Meanwhile back at the booth, the chicken and waffles are served up by Jake!
Wow, they look delicious and I love the full strips of bacon they place on top!
Let’s pour on some of the maple syrup and try them out!
The trick to eating these is to get an equal amount of waffle, chicken and bacon in every bite and I pulled it off here. They do a great job of this and it’s a sweet and savory treat. You can read more about it in the chicken rating below!
Four Dixie Chickens—I was a little disappointed that we couldn’t try this on the waffled cheddar biscuit, but it was still a tasty treat. I’d say for this mini chicken and waffles tour stop that they tied with EatandEvolve.
They both had good waffles but I think EatandEvolves chicken won out over Childers. But Childers bacon strips beat out EatandEvolves bacon by a little bit, so I’d say it’s a tie.
Both are delicious chicken and waffle dishes I highly recommend. Stay tuned for the next chicken and waffles dinner next week!
