One of the things I love about doing the MBIP blog is discovering places and hidden gems in and around this city that I never would’ve known about if it weren’t for the fact I constantly have to find different spots to visit and write about for this blog. That’s how I discovered AmVets Post 64 in downtown Peoria. For a long time, I thought it was a private place, just for members, but in my travels I discovered it’s a great spot for lunch and it’s open to the public. Since today is Veteran’s Day, I thought it would be the perfect spot to go visit, have a tasty lunch and say thank you to all the Veteran’s who have done duty and helped make this country great by their services. And so away we go to AmVets Post 64 in downtown Peoria.
AmVets Post 64 is located in this beautiful building on Monroe Street in downtown Peoria. It’s been standing on this corner for over 100 years.
As you walk in, there’s a nice painting of soldiers raising the flag on Iwo Jima. The bar and dining room are down the stairs here, so let’s go in and see what’s happening inside.
It’s really nice in here and as you can see, there’s a huge rectangle bar to sit and relax at. As I wandered over to it, I saw Cindy who’s been the bar manager here for over four years. She told me she remembered the tenderloin post we did from here which was just about three years ago! I can’t believe three years have gone by! Tammy was doing bartending duty and the MBIP Camera caught her in mid-blink! I’ll try to get one with her eyes open soon, keep on scrolling to see how that works out!
Here’s the view from where I’m seated and there’s the kitchen and cooking area in the back. That’s Robert on the left and T.C. on the right. T.C. is the gentleman who cooked up our tenderloin on that visit, so I’m anxious to sample today’s lunch! We’ll take a little look around as these two cook up today’s meal!
There’s a dining area with tables directly behind the bar. And the bar is full service and has a nice selection of beers and they can whip up just about any cocktail you desire! Tables also line the far wall and I love that they still have fall decorations up and have’t jumped the gun on Christmas stuff yet! AmVets has daily lunch specials and on Tuesday nights there’s a jackpot drawing. There’s a trivia night every Wednesday and on Fridays there’s dinners here that are open to the public. If you’ve never been here, you should stop by and check it out.
There’s a state of the art shuffleboard table as well as gaming machines in here if you feel lucky! I love the Budweiser Veteran’s pictures and neon on the wall. Here’s to the Heroes!
Meanwhile, back at the bar...
Here’s Tammy with our lunch and this time I got her with her eyes wide open and looking great! And speaking of looking great, check out today’s lunch...
I got the grilled pork chop sandwich and Tater Tots and it looks and smells like a couple slices of heaven! The sandwich is really tasty, I got it with grilled onions and it’s got a nice slathering of savory barbecue sauce on it. The pork chop is juicy and cooked perfectly and the Tater Tots are cooked really crispy, just the way I like them. AmVets is open for lunch daily from 11AM to 1:30PM and they have a full menu, you can check that out here. If you’re a Veteran and you’re reading this today, they’re offering a free lunch to Veterans and their family and guests today.
After lunch, Cindy brought out a surprise, she had some homemade thumbprint cookies that she brought from home.
These are so good, if she ever decides to start selling them, Trefzger’s better watch their backs! These aren’t here every day, but if you’re lucky like me, Cindy might share some with you! They were delicious and a sweet way to end my lunch at AmVets Post 64!
I really want to say a heartfelt thanks to all of the Veterans out there that have served our country. This is your well-deserved day and I hope you all enjoy it and know we appreciate the service and sacrifice all of you have made for us that live here. Thank you and Happy Veterans Day!
