On this day, May 13th something historical happened on TV in 1994, but nobody knew it at the time. This was when Johnny Carson made a brief guest appearance on the David Letterman show. Two years earlier on May 22, 1992 he retired from The Tonight Show and outside of this appearance, he pretty much pulled a Greta Garbo and disappeared from the public eye. Here’s the Letterman clip and below are six online articles and interviews about the legendary talk show host, Johnny Carson. Then there’s the MBIP Coming Attractions for this week, but first...Heeeeere’s Johnny!
A Timeline of Johnny Carson's Life - There were no commercial interruptions until 1957.
Theeeeere’s Johnny! - Most people remember The Tonight Show as being based in Los Angeles, but for the first ten years it was broadcast from New York City and this Vanity Fair article highlights that decade.
Johnny Carson: The Rolling Stone Interview - Johnny Carson was pretty private and didn’t give a lot of interviews, but he opened up to writer Timothy White for this Rolling Stone interview.
Joan Rivers: Why Johnny Carson "Never Ever Spoke to Me Again" - Johnny Carson was someone who helped make Joan Rivers a comedy star, but turned his back on her when she started a rival talk show on the Fox Network.
Johnny Carson: The Man Who Retired - Bill Zehme scored the last print interview that Johnny Carson ever did for the June, 2002 issue of Esquire magazine.
I went to The Red Barn last night and enjoyed a two-course meal and three live bands including, Thetah, Super 88 and Encounter @ L-5. It was a fun night and you can see photos of that evening tomorrow on the blog. Tuesday is the beginning of the end of the seven months of steak tour. It’s the last official entry, but as always I’m going to stretch it out for a couple more posts, so stay tuned for that. Wednesday I’m going to try another super-awkward “Can I Eat My Lunch In Here” episode. I’ve failed with this a lot in past segments, so let’s see if I can get back on track with this series! Thursday will be the third installment in my somewhat new Places In Peoria series and then we’ll have a Frozen Food Friday segment. Saturday will highlight a storefront and then we’ll be back to another Sunday Links post. This shit just goes round and round and round like Charlie Brown’s circular head! We’ll see you all tomorrow!
